Conrad Santos

Profession: Banker, Father & BJJ Enthusiast

I have been training in Brazilian jiu jitsu for approximately 5 years now and have progressed to the level of blue belt with 4 stripes.  I currently train on a regular basis, typically three to five times a week as a hobby and a way to upkeep my desired level of fitness.  At 48 years old with my work and family commitments to keep up this kind of training intensity does not come without sacrifice however my passion for the art somehow does keep me going.  I do consider it a luxury and a privilege to be a jiu jitsu practitioner at my age and to be able roll often with people less than half may age and far more athletic without total embarrassment.

The challenge for me, given the aforementioned, is how to continue to improve my game and get to the next level.  I attend a reasonably large BJJ class on a consistent basis where the majority of the students in the class are white belts and often find myself at the far left during the line up at the beginning of the class.  In other words I am often one of the higher ranking belt in the class currently and started to feel an absence of experiential influence from higher belts hampering my personal growth.

My current instructor in the larger class is a very high caliber black belt and is also a great teacher but would be very challenged to give me enough personal time and attention in the class that I would ideally want to have given the size of the class and overall needs of the other students. For months I knew I needed private instruction to achieve my growth objective and to perform better in the larger class during the sparring sessions. My plan started to come together when I met Arther.

Arther’s passion and commitment to the art has been defined by his personal achievements.  After many medals in local competitions, Arther has gained some serious ‘world class’ credentials having recently won a silver medal in the European Jiu Jitsu Championships held in Lisbon in January 2015 and competing at the Pan Ams in California against the world’s best.  I consider it a privilege to be one of Arther’s students.

His technical expertise and instruction has helped me gain better form in my jiu jitsu game and more importantly helped me develop the confidence that I can continue to improve. He teaches me enhanced techniques that are suited to my skill level, body type, and ambition which I guess is the point of private instruction.

Arther, is highly dedicated jiu jitsu practitioner and an outstanding teacher.  As a person, he very conscientious and operates with high levels of integrity. He is just an overall great guy!  I would, without hesitation, recommend to anyone who is considering private instruction for themselves or their family members to consider Arther as a private instructor as they will not be disappointed.

Arther is a tremendous teacher. He always finds a way to reveal little details in even basic techniques and concepts that you thought you knew. His charisma and the planning that goes into each lesson keeps the class exciting but organized, which a teacher like myself notices and appreciates. He is also able to create catchy "rules" and analogies to help you remember what you're supposed to be doing out there. In my case, Arther fixed a lot of the fundamentals I was missing as a new blue belt and helped me discover a love of the gi.

Arther Chandramohan was my first BJJ instructor. Feeling super awkward and self-conscious, I walked onto the mats for the first time. He was teaching the women’s class at that time. From that first class onwards I recognized his incredible talent, hard work, humour, and knowledge within the martial art of BJJ. Over my first year training, he continued teaching the women’s class and had everyone working hard to learn his handy techniques. His classes are the best and it’s an honour as a student to learn from such a humble and incredibly knowledgeable guy. He is professional, but makes you feel comfortable with his unique sense of humour. He is always happy to answer any questions that people have, and has continued to answer questions for me when I email them from the other side of the world. He goes over and beyond for the benefit of his students. You will not regret the day you decided to learn from this incredible martial artist.

The most appealing quality Arther has as an instructor is his passion. He shares his knowledge eagerly and his teaching style is very organized and meticulous. Every lesson is part of a well thought out curriculum he has planned out for his students. As ️jiujitsu is based on the action and reaction of two people, every move he shows is always paired up with two or three options explained in detail. It is obvious he has put a lot of thought in every single class he teaches, I often see him reviewing and adding class plan notes on his phone before or at the end of class.

Being a smaller female student, I often feel very flustered and scared when sparring with bigger opponents. There have been times in which i felt the sport wasn't for me. As he also spars with opponents who are 50-60lbs heavier than him, I feel like he has a good understanding of how overwhelming size difference can be. His belief that technique will conquer power shows in his eagerness to help me troubleshoot scenarios, providing me with options to counter these obstacles with technique. His work ethic towards his own practice is evident. He is always on the mats and is also sending us video analysis.

It has been a true blessing to be a student of his.
